Our story

It started with
a place to be heard.

Founded in January 2014 in New York City by Hamdan Azhar and Ayisha Irfan, MWC grew out of a commitment to Muslim American storytelling.

Open mics brought poets, journalists, comedians, musicians, and first-time performers together. Workshops and collaborations offered more ways to share work and find community.

Voices from the community

A voice from our early gatherings

“Sitting here feeling loved, crying together, laughing together & celebrating our existence.”
